In his article, INFOGRAPHICS – A NEW KIND OF BUSINESS REPORT?, (which can be found here) Dr. Jim Porter explains how a digital platforms allows for a more visual approach to reporting data within a business.
What I find to be the most important take away from Porters article is how important it is to have strong, relevant information behind the graphic. Simply put it is easy to WOW people with impressive graphics but without any substance behind the image the purpose is lost. This also becomes highly important factor to consider as a consumer. We cannot become consumed by the impressiveness of a graphic to the point that we overlook the content.
The infographic comes with many benefits to providing a visually rich and simplified way to present data. At the same time it also provides a huge distraction form the data that can be used to mislead the user. What is important is visual literacy. Essentially, people must learn to read graphics the same way they would plain text in order to critically view the substance behind the image.
